Chew Stoke Methodist Church - Who Are We?

We are a welcoming congregation who worship in the village of Chew Stoke and seek to serve the village and surrounding communities. Chew Stoke is set in beautiful countryside close to the Mendips and even closer to Chew Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in the South West and a haven for bird-life.  There has been a worshipping community of Methodists in Chew for 220 years and the older part of the building is almost 200 years old.  Recently we have added a modern extension with kitchen and showers which mean that the chapel is a valuable resource for village groups and for visiting groups such as youth groups and away days. 
As a Christian congregation we worship regularly on Sunday mornings, and with our friends at the parish church of St Andrews we run a Sunday Club for children from the village.  There are fellowship groups that meet either at the church or in a home in the village and there is a monthly lunch club with organisers from the village, for older people from the locality.
We seek to extend a warm welcome to all who would like to come to our church and hope to provide worship and activities that are relevant to the lives of all around us.

Regular Events


Sunday morning services
are held at 10.30am with varied styles of worship on offer and with a service of Holy Communion which all are welcome to attend once a month.   

The Sunday Club
meets twice a month (2nd and 4th Sundays in term time) and is open to any child who would like to attend.  One of these meetings is a family service and the other involves a lively programme of activities of all sorts.  The Club meets one month in St Andrews Parish Church and the next month at the Methodist Church.   

Wednesday Fellowship Group
Meets at 2.30 p m normally in the Hall but sometimes at a member’s home, usually 2nd & 4th Wednesday

Thursday Lunch Club
meets on the third Thursday


Lettings
A number of groups regularly use the hall including, 2 Pilates sessions, 2 Bridge groups, some activities organised by the local authority, a monthly afternoon group for the elderly, and a very well supported weekly Mother and Toddler group on Wednesday mornings.
The Hall is available to hire by groups who may wish to make use of them for suitable activities either on a regular basis or for a one-off occasion.
 

History

John Wesley visited the village on several occasions in the 18th century and a Society was founded in 1790. The Chapel was built in 1816 as a rectangular east/west orientated building. This was extended in 1900 with the addition of a piece to the north, a porch, toilet and vestry and the chapel turned round to north/south. In 2001/2 there was external refurbishment of the main building and a new award winning Hall was added. The outfitting has progressed steadily over the subsequent years in that we now have a well equipped and maintained centre which includes loop and P A System and fitted kitchen. It is a Grade II listed building.
We are known for our hospitality - try our Pancake Lunches on Shrove Tuesday, Cream Teas each Sunday afternoon in June and Easter morning breakfast after Lakeside Sunrise Service near Woodford Lodge.
